We have signed up to receive a new maker kit every month from Tinker Crate! This Month's kit is a bio mechanical hand and all you need is a pair of scissors to make it! We are giving this kit away at our October ALL IN meeting. It looks pretty cool!

“An evil scientist will unleash a virus upon the world in thirty minutes, unless you can foil his plan!” Nothing engages students like saving the world...or when learning feels like a game, especially one where you are racing against the clock. This summer, several All IN members from various Allegan County school districts attended a professional development session on Breakout EDU. This new concept of “classroom escape games” engaged us, and has us thinking about possibilities for bringing this to our own school districts. Here’s how it works: players have a fixed amount of time to solve a series of challenges, riddles, and mysteries in order to “break out.” Each game is designed so that players are immersed in the experience and are racing against the clock to break out before time expires. The game facilitator reviews how the team did and reveals what they may have missed if they were unable to solve the puzzle mysteries and breakout. Teachers prepare the games ahead of time using kits including various locks, boxes, and black lights and black light pens for writing “invisible messages” that students have to decode. Kits are available here, but there is a lot of room to get creative and make your own with their open source guide. Breakout games encourage teamwork, problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, and troubleshooting, as well as technology skills, like using QR codes. The best part is, they can be used for any subject area or concept by changing the nature of the clues. The website has a collection of games that have been tried by real educators, as well as a “sandbox” for those brave souls willing to try a newly developed game. Want to learn more? The official Breakout EDU Facebook group is a bustling hub of passionate educators and resources to get you started challenging your students to escape...if they can! Inspired by the short film, ‘Caine’s Arcade’, the Global Cardboard Challenge is an annual event presented by the Imagination Foundation to celebrate child creativity and the role communities can play in fostering it. In September, kids of all ages are invited to build anything they can dream up using cardboard, recycled materials and imagination. Then on October 1, 2016, communities come together to play! Go to their site for more info.
ALL IN is a core team of educators that are networking and making plans to move Allegan county forward into the MakerSpace world! The kickoff event for the team was a Breakout Training at Berrien RESA on July 14, 2016. Each member that attended not only received training on how to use a Breakout Kit, they also received a Breakout Kit to use in their local district. The team also had another opportunity to attend a 3D Printer workshop at KRESA that showcased several 3D printers as well as the City X project which teaches creative problem solving using 3D printing technologies and the design process. Look for more information about the workshops in future posts!
This looks like a great free webinar on deconstructing traditional Science lessons so that more students can learn.
The date for the webinar is Wed Aug 24 at 4:00-5:30. Here is a summary: Using UDL principles framed by CCSS, Luis & Kendra will take you on a deconstructing journey exploring processes to use available tech tools to create more engaging and supportive lessons that meet academic needs of all learners. I will post the link to the recorded archive of the webinar when it's available. It's sponsored by the Center on Technology and Disability. They provide great webinars! |
